frequently asked questions:

- Why do I get errors when processing XML files saved as Unicode in TextPad?
Some XML processors require that files start with a byte order mark (BOM). By default, TextPad does not write that, because many other applications that process Unicode don't understand it.

Solution:

To force the BOM to be written, check the option to "Write Unicode and UTF-8 BOM", in your XML document class.
- When I save a file as name.ext, why is it saved as name.ext.txt?
This is due to the way Microsoft implemented the Save As dialog box: If you supply an extension it doesn't recognize (including none), it either appends the default extension, if the filter is "*.*", or the first extension in the list for the selected filter. This behavior is designed to enforce the strong association between extensions and applications in Windows, but it does get in the way at times. One of the most irritating aspects of this is that it can create files with names like FILE.XYZ.TXT, when you type FILE.XYZ.

Solution:

To allow a file to be saved with an arbitrary extension, delete the default extension from the File page of the Preferences dialog box, and select "*.*" from the "Save as Type" list on the Save As dialog box. Alternatively, you can force it to accept exactly what you type by putting quotes around the name.
- How do I close the DOS window if it does not close after I have chosen "Close DOS window on exit" for my tools?
Please extract the file, _default.pif (242 bytes), in your "Windows" directory. The important setting it has is "Close on exit". You can change this by right clicking "_default.pif" in explorer, selecting the "Program" tab and ticking the option "Close on exit", then click OK.
- Why doesn't the online help work?
Please note that the online help in TextPad 4.4.2 and later requires Microsoft's HTML Help Engine. If you have Windows 95, NT 3.51 or NT 4 prior to Service Pack 4, please download and install this self-extracting TextPad help file, which uses the old Windows Help Engine:
TXPWINHELP.EXE (English only).
It has not been updated since release 4.4.1, so context sensitive help may no longer work. Alternatively, except for NT 3.51, you may install Internet Explorer, and then run Microsoft's HHUPD.EXE (705KB).
- I have installed the Windows Help file but it does not work?
Please try removing or renaming the file Txpad???.chm in the System subfolder of TextPad. Then please check you have the correct version of the help file for TextPad 4.4. Download and install it from here:
 Windows Help for TextPad 4.4
This is only available in English.
- Why are Japanese characters displayed incorrectly?
First, you must install operating system support for Japanese, using Regional Applets on Control Panel. (This is not supported on Windows 9x and ME.) Secondly, you must set the font script to Japanese, for all relevant document classes. A suitable font is MS Mincho.
- Why am I not licensed to use TextPad?
Please click here for information about license upgrades.
- Is TextPad Year 2000 Compliant?
Yes. Please click here for details.
- Why does Shift+Backspace type a block character?
The Shift+Backspace problem occurs with certain combinations of keystroke compatibility and customizations, if they are carried over from TextPad 3.2.5. It can be fixed as follows:
  1. From the Configure menu, choose Preferences.
  2. Select "Keyboard".
  3. From the list of Categories, choose Edit.
  4. From the list of Commands, choose EditBackspace.
  5. Type Shift+Backspace in the shortcut box.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Click OK.
- Where is the 16-bit edition of TextPad 4?
We have no plans for a 16-bit edition of TextPad 4.0, as of mid-1999. Our justification is based on the following argument:
  1. Our web site statistics show that the ratio of downloads of the 32-bit edition over the 16-bit edition is greater than 50 to 1, and increasing.
  2. The effort required to implement new functionality in the 16-bit edition is much greater than for the 32-bit edition.
  3. A new PC, capable of running Windows 98, probably costs less than half that paid for a PC still running Windows 3.1, and is capable of running at least 5 times as fast.
  4. Most businesses write off PCs after 3 years, and Windows 95 is 4 years old.
  5. If Windows 3.1 still satisfies requirements, why doesn't TextPad 3?
Fairly crude economics, but an unfortunate fact of life!
TextPad 3.2.5 can still be downloaded from here.
- Why does the setup program run so slowly?
InstallShield sends DDE messages, which can be blocked by applications such as MS Outlook and Lotus Notes. Exit from all applications, before installing TextPad.
- Why, when I double click on a file in Explorer, does it take several seconds for TextPad to start up?
You are probably running either Outlook or Lotus Notes in corporate or workgroup mode. These block DDE messages. One solution is to run Outlook in Internet mode. Alternatively, make your associations without using DDE as follows:
  1. In Explorer click on Tools and select Folder Options
  2. Select the tab File types.
  3. Select the file type from the list and click Edit.
  4. Under "Actions" select the "open" option click Edit.
  5. Clear the option "Use DDE"
  6. In the box called "Application used to perform action" add "%1" (including the quotes) to the end of the line.
- Why must I close the Find/Replace dialog box to see the highlighted text?
This happens when your default window background is the same color as the selection. To fix it:
  1. From the Configure menu, choose Preferences.
  2. Click the "+" next to Document Classes.
  3. Click the "+" next to Default.
  4. Select Colors.
  5. Select "Selected text (no focus)".
  6. Change the background color, so that it contrasts with your window background color.
  7. Click OK.
- Why can't TextPad keep up with my typing speed?
TextPad cannot keep up with touch typing speed, on Toshiba, IBM and HP laptops that have a NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV video controller, when its color depth is set to 24-bits or more. (This also happens with Outlook Express, so is not a bug in TextPad.) To workaround this, set the color depth to 16-bits. The problem is fixed in NeoMagic driver version 4.28.04Q, 4.0.28.
- Why is synchronized scrolling not working?
Due to a 16-bit limit in the scroll range of scroll bar messages in MS Windows, this feature is not supported in word wrap mode.
- Why does TextPad hang after a Find on Windows 2000?
This can occur if the option "Transparent dialog boxes" is selected and your display driver does not support this. To solve this problem please try the following:
  1. Click on the Configure menu in TextPad.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Select the View page.
  4. Clear the option "Transparent dialog boxes".
  5. Click OK.

The TextPad is a powerful, general purpose editor for plain text files. Easy to use, with all the features a power user requires.

Features:
  1. • Huge files can be edited, up to the limits of virtual memory. See Specifications for the actual limits.
  2. • Supports Universal Naming Convention (UNC) style names, and long file names with spaces.
  3. • CUA compliant keyboard commands.
  4. • English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish user interfaces.
  5. • A spelling checker with dictionaries in 10 languages.
  6. • Multiple files can be simultaneously edited, with up to 2 views per file.
  7. • Warm Start feature lets you restart exactly where you left off.
  8. • In addition to the usual cut, copy and paste capabilities, selected text can be case shifted and block indented, and characters, words and lines can be transposed. Cut and copied text can be appended to the clipboard, as well as replacing its contents.
  9. • Text can be automatically word-wrapped at the margin, or at a specified column, if it does not fit on a line. In this mode, text can be split into separate lines where wrapping occurs, or lines can be intelligently joined, preserving paragraphs.
  10. • OLE2 drag and drop editing for copying and moving text between documents.
  11. • Unlimited undo/redo capability. The undo buffer can be optionally cleared when a file is saved, or by using the Mark Clean command.
  12. • Block (column) selection mode, and visible display of tabs and spaces.
  13. • A keystroke macro recorder, with up to 16 active macros.
  14. • Sorting, using up to 3 keys.
  15. • Text can be automatically aligned and indented, relative to the previous line, to aid block indentation.
  16. • The right mouse button pops up an in-context menu.
  17. • The cursor can be constrained to the text, or can be positioned freely in the document view.
  18. • Toolbar with fly-by usage hints, and an active status bar.
  19. • A powerful search/replace engine using UNIX-style regular expressions, with the power of editor macros. Sets of files in a directory tree can be searched, and text can be replaced in all open documents at once.
  20. • Visible bookmarks can be placed on individual lines, and on all occurrences of a search pattern. Bookmarked lines can be cut, copied or deleted.
  21. • A built in file manager for fast file copying, renaming, deleting etc.
  22. • Print previewing, and printing with customizable headers/footers and page breaks.
  23. • Viewer for binary files using a hexadecimal display format.
  24. • Built in file comparison utility, and up to 16 user-defined tools with argument macros.
  25. • Hypertext links from file search and user tool output to the relevant source line.
  26. • DDE interface to other tools, such as MS Visual C++. The editor detects when an open file has been modified by another tool, and prompts you to reopen it.
  27. Enhancements:
  28. • New commands on the Window menu to arrange or tile document tabs in horizontal or vertical groups. Tabs can be dragged and dropped between groups.
  29. • When the desktop theme is set to Windows Classic, The TextPad automatically adopts that appearance, after it is restarted.
  30. • Now available with the French and Japanese user interfaces.
  31. Issues resolved:
  32. • When a bookmark was placed on the last, empty line of a document, it was not scrolled into view by the Next/Previous Bookmark commands.
  33. • On the General page of the Preferences dialog box, "Program Menu" was not checked unless The TextPad had been installed for all users.
  34. • The wrong font was used in the Tool Output window for DOS commands.
  35. • After opening a workspace, the focus should have been in the active document, rather than the Search Results or Tool Output window.
  36. • The list of documents in the Document Selector was sometimes not displayed.
